Down on the farm

Sunday, 27 May 2012

5GS were very lucky to be invited to Laverstoke Park Farm owned and run by the Scheckter family. It is a fully organic farm situated around the villages of Overton and Laverstoke. Many of the Cheam families will be familiar with the farm as it was used for the sponsored walk in the Autumn term. Others will be familiar with the farm because of the range of foods that are created on site from their vast range of produce and livestock.

It was the livestock that the children went to see and they were treated to a special tour of the chickens, cattle, sheep, pigs and buffalo. This trip was to make the children more aware of livestock and what it takes to rear them for their eventual outcome, which is normally food based!

One of the main highlights for the children was feeding the young buffalo with bottles of milk and seeing the piglets gorge themselves on the fruit that the boys and girls had brought in. The children learnt so much from their experience and the educational team at Laverstoke was keen to correct any preconceived ideas about farming, especially when one child felt that it would be dangerous to keep cows and chickens together as the cows might eat our feathered friends for tea!  As for tasting, yes we did!  It was sweet and yummy, perfect after a school packed lunch!
