English
There is probably more argument about English, its use and abuse, than about any other subject. Given that it is necessary for understanding and communication, a key which unlocks other subjects and the language of a rich literary heritage, there is ample justification for the time spent on it as a subject in the curriculum.
We believe that it is vital that the children enjoy their lessons, seeing them as providing both a skills base and a chance to explore texts and ideas and express their own feelings and thoughts. Putting them in touch with other minds, giving them the opportunity to read a wide variety of prose, poems and plays, helps to develop confidence and broaden outlook. The use of drama, in many guises, reinforces the idea of personal engagement with texts and the ideas they express.
When setting work we believe that the more real the purpose the better the motivation and outcome.
The children come to us with talents; we try to develop their creativity, broaden their knowledge and love of literature and help them to say what they mean.
