Victory for Cheam

Prep Schools' Debating Day at Marlborough College.

Daniel P,Carina H and Dulcie B attended Marlborough College's debating day. The morning consisted of debating workshops. The team, along with pupils from nine other schools, were given the motion ‘This house believes lessons should be made optional and replaced with Community Service’. The team had 15 minutes to prepare their case. Rather them than me!

Our two speakers had to deliver presentations lasting four minutes whilst facing questions and interruptions from the floor. Just to participate and compete requires nerves of steel, as it is a very intimidating atmosphere.

After the deabate the Marlborough judges went away to decide upon which school had won. The Headmaster of Marlborough announced that Cheam were the victors. Carina was described as ‘ruthless’ and ‘scary’. The judges enjoyed her decisive line of attack. Daniel was described as having a very mature approach to the debate, with ‘excellent eye contact’.

The pair were presented with the Debating Cup which is now back at Cheam. Mr Kehoe was very impressed and proud of his team.
