French Day

This year's 'Journée Française' at Cheam School was held recently.

The theme chosen was 'Les Voyages' and the children created a magnificent variety of posters, models and even a cake based on the topic. The school was decorated in the colours blue, white and red and many of the staff kindly varied their usual routines à la française.

The day started with a special French style breakfast of croissants and 'pains au chocolat' and was followed by the eagerly anticipated French Day Assembly. A video link with Mme T. avec enfants in Canada opened proceedings and then the school was treated to two fantastic songs by Years 1 and 2 – both sung with great enthusiasm and clarity. Well done to them and merci beaucoup à Mme Crosswell! This was followed by a high-tech travel quiz played in divisions, which was won this year by Aldrich who are the first holders of the 'La Tour des Lumières' - bravo!

The school then sang the choruses of “À Toi la Gloire” (Thine be the Glory!) in French and heard “Notre Père” by some of our native French speakers. Mr. J. proceeded to dazzle and amaze the school with stories of his latest visit to “Afrique” in French where he met some very unusual beasts, before normal lessons resumed.

During morning break, the staff were treated to a French style morning snack and then filled in a challenge where they had to identify 15 flags from the pays francophones. This year Mr. Goodwin was the winner, although having worked as a flag-maker in a previous life may have been somewhat at an advantage.

During periods 5 and 6, we were treated to the reading competition, this year adjudicated by James Stanforth from Eton College, and we were delighted with the quality of all of the readers from Years 4 to 8. The winners were as follows:

Year 4 (Il y avait une fois un taxi)4NM
Year 5 (L'avion)Minna E
Year 6 (Pour aller chez Mme Dubois)Edward V
Year 7 (Nicholas et les Copains)Isabella I
Year 8 (Le Petit Prince)Lyonel T

The competition was especially well contested this year and all readers should be congratulated on the hours of work put into developing an authentic sounding reading.

Lunchtime saw the close of the French proceedings as the school tucked into le déjeuner de croques-monsieur et coq au vin - délicieux!

Vraiment une journée superbe!
