A Smashing Time!
Our Year 5s enjoyed their first glass making workshop before half term. We welcomed Sarita Lavender, a glass artist from Worcester, to Cheam for the first time to christen our new glass kiln.
Tuesday 10th November 2009
Sarita gave us an introduction to glass as a material and examples of how she uses glass. We were shown some beautiful bowls, cuff links, Christmas tree decorations and jewelry, all examples of Sarita’s work. We were also shown a demonstration about the dangers of glass and how we could protect ourselves during the workshop. We donned face masks and goggles to keep ourselves safe.
Sarita explained the three basic techniques we were to use, those being ’kiln carving’, ’painting’ with light and ’inclusions’. We began our project by drawing from life-fresh flowers, to coincide with our term’s project of still life. On clear square glass tiles we had fun trying out the techniques to illustrate our flower pictures which included using small pieces of coloured glass, enamel and copper paper, also enamel paint. Sarita also taught some very keen glass makers how to cut glass during lunch break.
At the end of the day, Miss vK and Mr Donlevy loaded up the kiln and fired all the work. They were very excited to open the kiln the next day to see the fantastic results which have been put on display immediately for the whole school to see.
Thank you Sarita for such an interesting day. We learnt a lot! Miss vK and Mr Donlevy
