The Arts

Cheam has a proud tradition in the Arts and there are extensive opportunities for children to develop the creative side of their lives through the media of music, art, drama and dance.

In music, the school boasts five choirs, an orchestra, several ensembles and over 75% of pupils learn at least one instrument at school. The Director of Music coordinates the musical programme and arranges for the children to take their various Associated Board examinations each year. There are biennial overseas tours including choir tours to Paris and, more recently, New York.

There is a double drama lesson on the Year 3 - Year 6 curriculum which takes place in the Drama Studio. There is a major production each year (either a drama or musical) and several other occasions when the children can showcase their skills. Performance is at the centre of the Arts at Cheam and there are many opportunities for all children to demonstrate their skills in public, to tremendous parental support.

The Art Studio provides the facility for Art and Design and examples of pupils' work can be seen all around the school. There is a wide range of activities available including drawing, painting, sculpture, design, pottery and glass-making. A number of children are put forward for scholarships to their public schools each year. There are regular trips to galleries and the Art Scholars spend a weekend visiting the great collections in Paris or Florence as part of their scholarship preparation.
