The Prep section of the school comprises Years 3 - 8 and currently has 300 pupils. The curriculum has a contemporary, hands-on feel where children debate and explore subjects. We are committed to developing life-long learners with enquiring minds. Teamwork and collaboration are high on the agenda in our teaching practice, providing both the skills and knowledge that will equip pupils well for the future.

The school curriculum is geared towards preparing pupils for Common Entrance and Scholarship exams at 13+. We endeavour to provide a bespoke, broad curriculum which embraces the key examinable subjects (English, Maths, Science, French, Latin, History, Geography and Philosophy and Ethics) whilst stretching the pupils’ creative and practical horizons through timetabled Art, Design Technology, Drama, Music, PE, ICT and PSHCEE. The children are taught in groups of no more than 20 pupils in bright, well-equipped and fully networked classrooms. All teachers use interactive display technology in their teaching. Pupils from Years 6 to 8 have their own Microsoft SurfaceGo devices which are fully networked and utilised across a wide range of subjects to support the children’s independence in research and time management.

We aim to get the very best out of all, whatever their ability and the school has an enviable record of success at Common Entrance and scholarship levels.

There is a thriving Learning Development Centre for those who need an extra specialist help whilst a dedicated scholarship class in the final two years ensures that the very able pupils are given every chance to fulfil their ambitions.

The curriculum is supported by an array of extra-curricular activities, daily sport, field trips, residential trips and regular outings to the theatre, museums, art galleries and places of cultural interest.

The pupils are divided into four Divisions. These are named after four of the former headmasters of the school, namely Aldrich, Beck, Gilpin and Tabor, and there is fierce competition between them. They compete in Division Music, Sports Day, sports events and through the pupil credit system.

Children’s mental health and well-being is vital to their happiness and learning. Our well-being centre The Nest provides wonderful support for pupils, staff and parents.

Further opportunities for self-development come from being part of the Boarding community. A variety of fixed and flexible option are available.
