The purpose built Nursery (built in 1998) is a warm and welcoming start to life at Cheam School. It is self contained, secure and inviting, allowing children to have safe free access to a well-planned outdoor learning environment.
Accepting a maximum of 24 children, the Nursery operates on a ratio of one qualified member of staff to seven children. Children enter from the term in which they reach their third birthday.
Children learn through play; we encourage exploration, investigation and discovery by presenting the children with equipment and activities that
are appropriate to the curriculum but open to individual interpretation rather than being narrowly defined. Skilled teaching builds on the children’s interests and leads pupils beyond the confines of their limited experience by observing the direction of their play and extending their horizons through open-ended questioning.
Language and literacy development is fostered through speaking and listening activities and early writing. In support of early literacy we begin ‘Read Write Inc’ - a systematic phonics programme - which is carried through into the Pre-Prep. We also encourage children to use mathematical knowledge in everyday situations and to apply this knowledge to problem solving. Children begin to learn French with a native French teacher and music by a Kodaly music specialist.
Ultimately our goal is to ensure that when the children leave our Nursery they will be confident, happy individuals, whose first experience of school is a positive one, so that they anticipate the rest of their time at Cheam with security and enthusiasm.
